Data Loss Prevention
Designing, deploying, and tuning DLP policies across endpoint, email, cloud, and network — aligned to GLBA, SOX, and PCI-DSS.
I'm Miles Randall — cybersecurity engineer, content creator, and proof that your starting point doesn't define your destination.
My journey isn't linear. It wasn't handed to me. It was forged through resilience — and a refusal to stay stagnant.
I've been the guy pushing a broom past the servers, the guy on help desk resetting passwords at 2 a.m., and now I'm the guy tuning DLP policies for a Fortune 500. Every stop had to happen for the next one to make sense.
2016. I was a custodian at a police station, mopping the same tile floor I mopped every night. A dispatcher walked past, looked me dead in the eye, and intentionally spilled her coffee on the floor I'd just cleaned.
I mopped it up. But something in me didn't. That was the moment I decided the floor wasn't going to be my ceiling.
From 2015 to 2018 I studied by day and worked custodial shifts by night. Professor Messer on YouTube. Practice tests on my phone during breaks. Notebooks full of subnet masks and CIA triads.
I earned the CompTIA trifecta — A+, Network+, Security+ — one exam at a time, on my own dime, without a degree, without a mentor, without a safety net.
February 2018. First IT role: Technical Support Specialist for fire panel systems. Not glamorous. Not cybersecurity. But it was the door. From there, Fire Alarm Technical Support Specialist to performing more complex tasks as a Level 2 Fire Alarm Technical Support Specialist.
Every title change was a rung. I didn't skip any of them.
2019. First real cybersecurity contract. Raytheon. Then Next DLP. Then Cyberhaven. Then Proofpoint. Now LPL Financial as Senior DLP Engineer — the exact seat I dreamt about when I was still holding a mop.
I'm grateful for every step. I'm also thankful for that spilled cup of coffee. It was the mess I needed to finally clear a path to my future.
From pushing a broom to protecting enterprise data. Here's how the path actually unfolded.
Started studying IT during breaks. Told three people I was becoming a cybersecurity professional. Public commitment: activated.
First IT role after passing the CompTIA trifecta. Fire panel tech support taught me more about troubleshooting than any bootcamp.
Broke into cyber through a defense contractor. Started specializing in data security — the lane I'd stay in for the next six years.
Building and tuning enterprise DLP policies across endpoint, email, cloud, and network — aligned to GLBA, SOX, PCI-DSS. Six figures. From a mop.
The one certification I chased hardest. Made the salary conversation different overnight.
Teaching the cheat code publicly. Cybersecurity, career strategy, honest gear reviews, and a house-selling vlog series I didn't plan on.
I'm a Senior DLP Engineer at LPL Financial, CISSP-certified, with 8+ years across endpoint, email, cloud, and network data security. I've worked at Raytheon, Next DLP, Cyberhaven, and Proofpoint — I don't just talk about DLP, I build it.
Off the clock, I run Miles Beyond Tech on YouTube — tech reviews, cybersecurity career strategy, and the occasional life update. My goal is to be the mentor I didn't have when I was holding a mop, wondering if any of this was possible.
Enterprise-grade security honed in financial services. Real policies, real detections, real audits.
Designing, deploying, and tuning DLP policies across endpoint, email, cloud, and network — aligned to GLBA, SOX, and PCI-DSS.
Ingesting, correlating, and hunting across enterprise log sources. Splunk pipelines, detection engineering, and rule tuning that actually fires.
Extending controls from the on-prem edge into SaaS and IaaS. AWS + Azure, with CASB overlays for shadow IT visibility.
Behavioral analytics, agent tuning, and incident response playbooks that actually get followed under pressure.
Mapping technical controls to frameworks auditors actually accept: GLBA, SOX, PCI-DSS, NIST. Making policy and reality match.
Turning technical, career, and life lessons into digestible video, LinkedIn posts, and long-form guides. Teaching is a security skill.

Cybersecurity engineer. Creator. Educator. Building a career and a brand on my own terms.
From Custodian to Cybersecurity Engineer
My story — from a hospital kitchen and a custodian's mop to a CISSP-certified cybersecurity engineer — and the cheat code I wish someone had handed me: breaking in without a degree, certifications or degrees, beating imposter syndrome, and building a meaningful, purpose-driven career in cyber.
